The warm, welcoming and friendly group at Oak Bay’s Penny Farthing Olde English Pub have made it a social meeting place and community centre since the first day it opened. Our three fireplaces provide a cozy focus for people to come together and enjoy good conversation, fantastic food and a great pint. We like to think of it as friends meeting around the hearth.
“There were two couples sitting a table apart and they got to chatting. They’d lived three houses apart for the past 11 years, but they had never talked until they came and sat in the pub, had a pint and a meal. They had a great time. That defines what a pub is: it’s a place to meet,” says publican Matt MacNeil.
Neighbours connect with neighbours. Visitors discover new friends. From young professionals or busy people in their middle years, to active seniors, everyone loves The Penny. We enjoy hearing your stories about what our fine pub means to the community.
Nestled along the coastline in the eastern reaches of Victoria is the quaint district of Oak Bay. Known for its upscale well-kept homes and gardens, whimsical Tudor-themed main shopping Village and British sensibilities, Oak Bay is jokingly said to exist “behind the Tweed Curtain.” The community’s annual Oak Bay Tea Party festival and parade is led by two fictitious characters, Mr. and Mrs. Tweedie in splendidly old fashioned British garb.
